Monument Snowboards

va opening day

Just three painfully long and warm months after Colorado opened, Virginia’s resorts cut the ribbon on the 2011/2012 season. Despite living in VA ,we still like to think of ourselves as avid snowboarders;  so we made the short drive to the hill to see what all of the hubbub was about.

Our best attempt at an opening day montage was foiled by snowmaking so here's the write up. We love the fine people over at yobeat.com and are totally going to steal their “chronological play by play” style of writing for this one… thanks yo!

9:15 – Hit the snooze button.

9:32 – Finally roll out of bed, already debating if we should actually go ride.

9:45 – My roommate, Kevin, cant find any of the necessary gear for our trip.

9:50 – I realize that I sent my awesome new FVK to Colin Wilson a month ago and have to ride my two year old Black Black.

10:00 – Gear located, car packed, ready to go.

(ready to roll in style in Kevin’s luxury Audi automobile)

10:05 – Stop at our uber hip locally sourced coffee shop.

10:15 – With a little caffeine and a sprinkled donut we are ready to hit the road.

(Kevin checking out the “talent” at the coffee shop)

10:30 – Stop at my parent’s house to steal some of my dad’s contacts (too broke to buy any since the summer, I don't mind driving blind but no way I'm riding that way)

10:45 –Still sitting at my parent’s house, being scolded for not calling them or my sister enough, and waiting on Davor, the third member of our crew on this voyage.

10:55 – With Davor on board we hit the road, for real this time.

12:30 – Make it to the hill, pull into the parking lot, officially pumped.

12:31 – Less pumped when I realize I still have to put my board together, and despite working for a snowboard company my deck is the oldest part of my setup.

(using a tool that came with our IKEA futon to put my board together)

1:20 – After about a half hour of waiting in line, we finally get our season passes and hit the slopes.

1:21 – Devastated when we realize they are making snow, and begin debating whether this is worth it or not again.

1:22 – Further devastation sets in upon realizing 4 slopes really only means one actual run.

1:30 – First run: success! We still remember how to snowboard.

(Davor checking out the lone run)

1:45 – First run through the park: fail. We completely forgot how to snowboard.

2:45 – Five runs in: time for a beer.

3:15 - After ten bucks, one beer, and one of the smallest hotdogs ever, we are ready to start filming for our opening weekend montage.

3:30 – Realize snow blowers don’t work well with camera lenses. Not disappointed, filming sucks anyway.

(failed filming attempt thanks to snow machines)

4:00 – Land first legitimate trick on the flat box.

4:01 – Over it.

4:15 – Head to lodge where Davor is already posted up fire side.

4:30 – In the car, headed home, completely satisfied, ready to party the night away.

(mandatory artsy end of the day shot)
